FAQs

Common questions, straight answers.

Everything riders ask most about common cycling issues and solutions.

My chain skips when I pedal hard. What's causing it?

Skipping usually comes down to a worn chain or cassette, cable tension that has drifted out of index, or a stiff link. Start by checking chain wear with a gauge, then fine-tune the rear indexing. Keeping the drivetrain clean and lubed prevents most of it.

2.4 or 2.6 tires: does the extra width actually matter?

It does, but it is a trade-off. A 2.4 rolls faster and handles sharper on hardpack, while a 2.6 gives you more grip, float and comfort on rough or loose ground. Match the width to where you actually ride rather than chasing the bigger number.

Is Microshift really as good as Shimano, or am I compromising?

For the money, Microshift holds up well and shifts reliably, and much of it plays nicely with Shimano parts. You give up some refinement and long-term polish, but for a budget build or a spare bike it is a sensible choice rather than a compromise.

Can I keep riding through a knee or hip niggle?

Often yes, if you manage it. Dialing in saddle height and fore-aft, keeping rides shorter, and warming up properly take a lot of load off the joint. If pain persists or sharpens, check in with a physio or doctor before you push through it.

What can I use instead of pricey cycling kit I don't have?

Plenty of gear has a cheaper stand-in. Electrical or hockey tape works in a pinch for bar wrap, and coconut oil or shea butter can sub for chamois cream. For components, third-party brands often match the big names for far less.

My front wheel won't spin freely. Where do I start?

Work from the outside in. Spin the wheel and watch for brake rub first, then check the wheel is seated square in the dropouts. If it still drags, look at hub bearing adjustment. A few minutes with basic tools usually finds the culprit.
