How the calculator works

There is no single perfect bar width, so this tool uses two well-known references together: a height-based estimate and the width range most riders use for your discipline.

Height estimate = a widely used mountain bike fit heuristic: your height in mm times 0.440 for a broader frame, or 0.426 for a narrower frame. It gives a personal starting number before we apply your riding style.

Discipline range = the grip-to-grip widths most riders settle on: roughly 700 to 740 mm for cross-country, 740 to 780 mm for trail, and 780 to 800 mm for enduro and downhill. Your estimate is kept inside this range.

Recommended width = the height estimate, held within your discipline range and rounded to the nearest 5 mm. Wider disciplines pull the number up; XC pulls it down.

Shoulder check = if you enter your biacromial (shoulder) width, we show how much wider the bar is than your shoulders. Modern MTB bars sit well outside your shoulders on purpose for steering leverage.

Treat the result as a starting point to test, not a biomechanical optimum. Bar width also interacts with backsweep, rise, stem length and grip angle, so give any new width a few rides before you judge it, and bias narrower for tight, wooded trails or shoulder and wrist discomfort.

Most modern trail riders land between 760 and 780 mm, with cross-country closer to 700 to 740 mm and enduro or downhill closer to 780 to 800 mm. There is no single perfect number: your height, shoulder width, riding style and how tight your local trails are all matter. Start inside your discipline range, then fine-tune from there.

There is no medically validated formula that turns shoulder width into one exact bar width. Modern mountain bike bars are deliberately much wider than your shoulders for steering leverage and control. Use your shoulder width as a lower reference point and a comfort check, not as a precise prescription, and choose the final width by discipline and feel.

Measure your biacromial width: the straight-line distance between the bony points at the outer top edge of each shoulder (the acromion processes). Stand relaxed in fitted clothing and have someone measure across your back with a level tape, then repeat two or three times and average. Record it in millimetres. This is not the same as chest width or the outside of your deltoids.

No. Wider bars give more steering leverage and stability on steep, rough, fast descents, which is why enduro and downhill riders run them wide. But too wide adds tree and doorway strikes, opens up your shoulders, and can strain your wrists. Narrower bars clear tight woods better and can feel quicker in slow technical terrain. The best width balances control against clearance and comfort.

Yes, that is the safe way to do it. Cutting a bar down is permanent, so buy a bar at or above the top of your test range, ride it, then trim it in small, equal amounts from both ends only once you are sure. Never cut carbon bars beyond the manufacturer marked cut limits, and re-check that your grips and controls still have clamp space before trimming.
