Torque in newton meters beats watts every time

Wattage is the least informative number in any listing, not least because "peak watts" is an unregulated marketing figure. Torque, measured in newton meters (Nm), is what you feel pulling away from a stop or holding a gradient. Mainstream hub motors tend to sit in the middle of the range and stronger mid-drives higher, and a well-tuned motor with moderate torque will out-climb a badly tuned one advertising twice the watts. Cadence sensing versus torque sensing, the difference nobody advertises

This is the single largest ride-feel difference between two otherwise identical e-bikes, and it is the spec most often missing from a product page. Battery: watt-hours are the only honest range number

Range claims are produced in the friendliest possible conditions: light rider, low assist, flat ground, warm air, no wind. You will not reproduce them. Battery safety and UL certification, which is a real issue

This is where e-bike buying differs genuinely from buying a regular bicycle. Poorly made lithium-ion packs, mismatched chargers and damaged cells can go into thermal runaway, and the resulting fires are fast, extremely hot and hard to extinguish. The problem is concentrated in uncertified imports, no-name replacement batteries and rebuilt packs, not in mainstream bikes from established brands.

Buy a bike certified to UL 2849 (the standard covering the complete electrical system: battery, charger, motor and controller together) with a pack certified to UL 2271. System certification matters more than a cell claim, because most failures happen at the interfaces. Frame style, fit, and why hydraulic brakes are not optional

Frame style is a comfort and accessibility decision, not a gender one, and on a heavy bike it matters more than it does on a road bike.

Brakes

A 65 lb bike carrying a 180 lb rider at 20 mph has roughly triple the kinetic energy of a light hybrid at 15 mph, and it sheds all of it through similar rotors. Battery replacement should influence which bike you buy. Packs degrade with charge cycles and with age, so after a few years expect noticeably less range than when new. Direct to consumer or local bike shop

Direct-to-consumer brands ship a box to your door and skip the retail margin, which is why their spec sheets look so strong for the money. You do get more motor, more battery and more accessories per dollar. What you do not get is someone to hand the bike to when the controller throws an error code in month fourteen. A local shop sells fewer specs for the same money and gives you a professional build, a fit session, a warranty you can walk into and a mechanic who can diagnose an electrical fault. Many shops will not service e-bikes they did not sell, which is worth checking in advance.

  • Search the brand name plus "replacement battery" and plus "warranty", and read what owners say two and three years in.
  • Check whether the display, controller and battery are proprietary or a common third-party system. Common parts age far better.

  • Weigh spec against support. In three years, support is the spec that matters.
