The maths

How the calculator works

The right pressure is the one that lets the tyre sag about 15 percent under load. That target moves with your weight, tyre width, tube type and the surface you ride.

Load split The rear wheel carries about 55 percent of you plus the bike, the front about 45 percent, so each wheel gets its own number.

Tyre width Wider tyres support the same load at much lower pressure. Doubling the width roughly halves the pressure you need.

Tubeless With no inner tube to pinch, tubeless tyres run about 10 percent lower for extra grip and comfort.

Treat the numbers as a smart starting point, then fine tune by feel. If the ride feels harsh or you bounce on rough sections, drop a few psi. If the tyre feels squirmy in corners or you are bottoming out on the rim, add a little back.

Bike tyre pressure FAQ

It depends mostly on your total weight and tyre width. A 75kg rider on a 9kg bike with 28mm tyres sits around 62 psi rear and 51 psi front on smooth roads. Modern wide tyres run far lower pressures than the 100+ psi that used to be common, giving more grip and comfort with no real speed penalty.

Yes. The rear wheel carries roughly 55 percent of the combined rider and bike weight and the front around 45 percent, so the rear needs more pressure. This calculator splits the load automatically and gives you a separate number for each wheel.

Up to a point. Very high pressure skips over rough surfaces and actually loses speed and grip, while a slightly lower pressure lets the tyre conform to the road and roll faster. Go too low and you risk pinch flats, rim strikes and a squirmy feel. The recommended figures aim for that efficient middle ground.

Tubeless setups can safely run about 10 percent lower than tubed tyres because there is no inner tube to pinch. Select Tubeless in the calculator and it drops the recommendation for you. Lower pressure is a big part of why riders switch to tubeless for grip and comfort.

Heavily. Pressure scales with the load on each tyre, so a heavier rider needs more pressure to support the same tyre at the same drop. Always include your kit and any loaded bags in the rider weight for the most accurate result.

Wider tyres support the same load at much lower pressure. A 40mm gravel tyre for a 90kg system runs around 34 psi rear tubeless, and a 57mm MTB tyre closer to 21 psi. Enter your real tyre width and pick the matching surface to get a sensible starting point, then fine tune by feel.
